On behalf of my people... ew

Are you sitting comfortably?
The WORLD (as seen on the Internet) is so full of WRONG
I am trembling with angst & futile wrath & churning with putrid liquid-nitrogen chills.
It is not that one man who is an acknowledged paedophile is free. Many people who have inebriated &/or drugged &/or abused &/or committed rape &/or committed buggery (for it seems these sort of things are best differentiated) are free. One of them is known to be dead, but I am lucky.
Not, it is not that this one person is free. It is not that art is seen as a balancing redemption. No, that stuff is too individual & subjective to stir wrath.
That which stirs my bile is the exultant masses, the vitriolic glee of people happy about this one person. More, about the implications of this glee.
It implies agreement with what the person in question said in an interview in the year I was born [is that irony or satire? - ed]:
"If I had killed somebody, it wouldn't have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But... fucking, you see... and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. Juries want to fuck young girls. Everyone wants to fuck young girls!"
Apart from the futile bile ridden nitro-angst, I am also wanting to write a jolly little ditty called "Everyone is a paedophile" or somesuch similar, a joyful ditty.
This is Totally Not Okay. Yet... peers, the populous, set the standard for society, for behaviour, for what is and is not okay. It seems that the standard has been set that everyone wants to fuck young girls.
Inside my heart is breaking etc. This one person being free is not what ails. It is the triumph of it. It is who has triumphed. It is the huge regressive step.
It is also the wondering... for if buggering a 13 year old girl is okay, is it okay if she is 12? 11? 10? 9? What about boys? When does it stop being okay? Why is it okay? What is okay at what age? Do we need a cross-referencing grid? I envision a sort of rape bingo...
These things do not help, I know, & I know my strange humour is not humour but pain, coughing out laughter rather than sobs and wails. What can I do... what can I do... what will I do... is not a question of futility, but of patience.

In other news: Elephants purr!
* Cut for being triggery , blunt, & use of very explicit language.
Public in the spirit of the personal is political, and if if not us, who? And if not now, when?

Date: 2010-07-13 02:10 pm (UTC)The diversity of reporting is astonishing. I was following the news on Twitter yesterday - many, many links. This one stuck out for the contrast between the article & the commentary.

To become a point of laughter is the fear of those who rely on fear... ~ponderponderponder~

Date: 2010-07-13 03:13 pm (UTC)Date rape, rape by a spouse, rape by a partner you live with, rape by a partner you do not, violent rape, rape by a stranger, rape by a relative, rape by a guardian, rape of a minor... the list goes on and on.
Rape rape is, one gathers, when it occurs live on a reality television 'chat show' & it wins the viewers vote.

Date: 2010-07-13 07:24 pm (UTC)and yeah, i've you've had "too many" sexual partners you can't be raped either, and anyways, no one will believe you. hadn't you heard?
things like these make me sick to my stomach because i can pretty much guarantee we all know AT LEAST one person who, if we had this conversation with them, would say something that would horrify you. they would be on the whoopi side of things. maybe not in this case, but in another one, a hypothetical one, something. and you won't ever forget it or be able to look them in the eye again.

Date: 2010-07-13 07:38 pm (UTC)Yup, in the Onehundred Village, we all know someone who's been raped, & someone who's like "nah, it wasn't rape rape".
There's a study (which I shall find the link to again - I have the pdf & it is rather big) that examined the cost of what I shall call for convenience 'grade A' crime. The big ones, the violent ones, the murders and suchlike.
It found, with a huge margin, that rape is the most expensive crime.*
Perhaps the fear & horror gets condensed, for 'we' don't talk about it so much, & less so personally** & the great guffaws lug about their nonsense & spout it freely, unhurt, unhindered, & rarely challenged.
*They did not include the cumulative budgets of Polanski's films.
** Okay, so there are a LOT of books about wah wah my childhood, but those are like Mills & Boon gone horribly, horribly wrong. We could use them to make a giant cudgel?
